VOCAL responds to GCP Procurement Principles
VOCAL Alliance – a member of the Global Coffee Platform (GCP) – responds to GCP’s industry-led publication on Procurement Principles. As a civil society coalition advocating for dignity and prosperity for people, and a thriving environment, VOCAL shares the following reflections and recommendations to industry and GCP on procurement:
1. We appreciate the industry’s acknowledgement that procurement is a driver of sustainability.
2. We lament that value contributions of producers remain under-acknowledged, with no commitment to use price or other value and risk-sharing mechanisms to improve upstream value capture.
3. We welcome industry to acknowledge and audit their procurement practices and leverage, and to rapidly and robustly update their procurement decisions accordingly.
4. We call for procurement to be integrated into GCP’s toolkit: the Sustainability Reference Code, Equivalence Mechanism, and Sustainable Purchases annual report.
