New Program at Mental Health America of Virginia, Richmond

Mental Health America of Virginia is pleased to announce that ABIL (Agoraphobics Building Independent Lives) has become a program within the MHAV organization.

A non-profit organization founded in 1986 by the late Shirley Ford Green, Mrs. Green dedicated herself to helping those suffering from debilitating anxiety and phobias through public education and establishing self-help support groups. During the past 20 years ABIL has helped thousands of Virginians in their recovery from anxiety illnesses, debilitating phobias, panic disorder, and agoraphobia (a condition which develops when someone begins to avoid places/situations associated with anxiety, and may result in becoming housebound), and has been a viable and strong organization within the Commonwealth.

With its move to MHAV in July, ABIL continues to promote mental wellness. MHAV/ABIL has developed a ‘warm line’ which is designed to provide information, referral, and a supportive presence to those who are diagnosed with anxiety disorders; providing direction and help to those who call.

MHAV works to improve the mental health of all Virginians through advocacy, education, research, and service. Paula Price, MHAV’s Executive Director welcomes the new addition to its current programming.

“MHAV is very pleased that ABIL has chosen to become a part of our organization. They have a long-established history of helping people build productive, fulfilling lives. Together, MHAV and ABIL will continue to promote good mental health.”

The ABIL Warm Line is open Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. and the program is directed by Yolande Long, M.S.W. Callers may feel free to leave a message if calling outside of the scheduled times. 804-225-5591 or toll free at 1-866-400-6428
